Immortal: Matilda of Flanders (wind)

Matilda Guide – The Energy Queen of Infinity Kingdom

Matilda might be technically as a support, but honestly, she plays like an engine. Her kit doesn’t heal or shield — instead, it supercharges your team’s energy regen and turns your immortals into ultimate-spamming machines.

She belongs to the Wind element, but don’t let that lock you in. The best part about Matilda is that she fits into almost any setup that relies on frequent ultimate casts — Fire, Wind, even odd cross-elemental hybrid control comps. I’ve used her with Hippo, Wu, and in Baldwin setups, and she performs incredibly well in the right synergy because her buff directly amplifies what makes most top-tier immortals strong: their ultimates.

How to Get Matilda

Matilda first appears as a KvK reward in Season 2. But for most players, the real way to build her is through the Golden Path Battlepass:

  • You can get her fragments directly
  • Or from the random Wind elemental fragment

She also has a small chance to appear in:

  • Random epic immortal fragments
  • Advanced Summons in the Hall of Immortals

Important: She does not appear in the Marketplace, so the Battlepass is by far the most reliable route for progression.

Skill Breakdown – “Elegant and Magnificent”

Matilda’s ultimate skill is the reason you pick her, period.

Elegant and Magnificent:

  • Increases energy regen speed by 20% for all allies for 9 seconds.
  • Every time an immortal deals damage with their ultimate during this 9-second window, that immortal gains a 20% damage increase for 1.5 seconds, stacking up to 3 times.

So, theoretically that’s +60% damage, but — and here’s the catch — that buff window is very short (1.5 seconds). It’s not a 9-second blanket buff; it spikes for brief moments during staggered ultimate damage hits.

You can confirm this in combat replays by checking the buff tab — you’ll see the stacks appearing and falling off quickly as ultimates tick.

Artifact – Bayeux Tapestry

This is what turns Matilda from “good” into “crazy.” Obtained via the Golden Path, Daily Pearls Shop (in s2) or through Stellar Compass event.

Bayeux Tapestry:

  • Extends her buff duration from 9 seconds to 12 seconds.

That extra 3 seconds doesn’t sound like much, but in reality, it closes the loop on her energy cycle. With high enough regen, you can reach near-100% uptime on her buff. Let’s break that down, read more below.

Matilda’s Energy Regen and Uptime

Her default base energy regen is 71.0, meaning she takes about 14 seconds to reach 1000 energy and cast. Her ultimate lasts 9 seconds, so normally she’d have a 5-second gap between buffs.

But once you invest in her and build properly, that gap disappears.

At Boost Level 25 + Energy Surge Tech (no surge artifact, no talents):

  • 83.1 energy regen → 12.03 seconds. But since we cannot overcap on energy she casts at the 13 second marker.

With Bayeux Tapestry:

  • Buff lasts 12 seconds
  • Cast cycle 13 seconds
  • 1 second of downtime!

Hitting the 100% Uptime Threshold

If you add either of the following, you exceed the critical 83.4 regen threshold needed for perfect rotation: 1000 energy divided by 83.4 regen = time to max energy of 11.9 seconds meaning you cast at the 12s marker.

At Boost Level 25 + Energy Surge Tech + Owl Guardian Military talent (no surge artifact):

  • Owl Guardian Talent (+5%) AND Surge Tech (+5%)

With those, you’re looking at around 86.6 energy regen, which maintains full uptime.

How It Actually Plays Out

Matilda’s ultimate works best on immortals that:

  • Deal multiple damage instances in one ultimate but with staggered timing on each damage instance (e.g. Hippolyta, or given procs Wu, Baldwin and others).
  • Given the very short window, you will NOT be able to chain multiple cast sequences.

Take Hippo, for example. Her ultimate hits 7 times. Each hit refreshes the damage buff, and by the 4th–7th tick she’s doing up to 60% more damage.

Wu and Baldwin also benefit because they sometimes re-cast their ultimates rapidly. Every extra proc can trigger another burst of boosted damage.

Now besides the simple “can I get a damage buff for my ultimate”, players are also asking me how to figure out if they can get the damage buffs on their tower of knowledge skills. Tower of knowledge skills are a very large part of an immortal’s damage output. To figure out if you can get a juicy Matilda damage buff for your tower of knowledge skills, you have to carefully review your immortal’s energy regen, starting energy and then count out the time to casts and see if they line up with the timer of tower of knowledge skills. For example, if an energy regen and starting energy means that an immortal casts his or her ultimate at second 11 (assuming no interruptions from silences and other control effects), then you are going to have the Matilda damage buff active at the 12th second where most tower of knowledge skills have a trigger timer. To read more about this pretty nerdy thing, check out this guide.

The Real Power: Energy Regen Buff

Getting value from the damage buff can be hard and sometimes impossible, but fear not, the real value here is that +20% energy regen for 9 (12) seconds.

That’s massive, especially for immortals who already have solid base regen or rely heavily on fast cycling. Think of it like a global Adrenaline Rush for your whole team.

Best Pairings

If you want to get real value from Matilda, pair her with immortals that either:

  1. Have multi-hit ultimates, or
  2. Depend heavily on fast energy cycling.

Here are some top combos I’ve tested and liked:

  • Fire: Hippo + Wu + Trajan + Matilda → nonstop ultimates and good scaling.
  • Wind: Baldwin + Saladin + Matilda → great regen uptime and Baldwin gets full damage buff chains.
  • Hybrid Defense: Charles + Hippo + Baldwin + Matilda → strong sustain and ultimate frequency.

She’s flexible — just avoid slotting her where no one benefits from the regen or short damage buff.

Conclusion – The Bottom Line

Matilda isn’t about flashy plays or top-line damage; she’s about flow. She controls your team’s tempo like a metronome, letting your main carries fire off ultimates faster and harder.

If you invest in her artifact and a make sure you have some combination of the regen bonuses, you can reach permanent uptime on one of the strongest buffs in the game.
