Spending Strategy Guide: Shadow Immortals vs Legendary Skills vs Chaos Immortals

Introduction

At some point every mid-to-large spender in Infinity Kingdom reaches the same dilemma: where should the next major investment go?

The three main options competing for resources are:

  • Shadow Immortals
  • Legendary (Red) Skills
  • Chaos Immortals

At first glance the answer seems obvious. Many players see top opponents running Chaos immortals and assume that the strongest path is to unlock those immortals first and then build skills afterward. In practice, that assumption leads many players into inefficient spending.

The reality is that skills usually provide far more power per dollar than new immortals. A well-built elemental march with strong legendary skills can defeat many Chaos-based marches, especially when the skill combinations are optimized.

Understanding this principle makes a significant difference when planning long-term account progression.

The Core Spending Principle

A Chaos immortal may look impressive because of its ultimate ability, but the real performance of a march usually comes from:

  • Skill synergy
  • Damage amplification
  • Sustain mechanics
  • Control effects

Because of this, replacing a normal Epic or Epic+ skill with a legendary skill often produces a much larger combat impact than replacing one immortal with a Chaos Immortal.

This is why many experienced players recommend prioritizing legendary skills before chasing Chaos immortals.

Why Legendary Skills Should Come First

Legendary skills offer several advantages that make them the best first investment for most mid-to-large spenders.

1. Immediate Power Increase

Replacing a standard skill with a legendary skill is often a massive upgrade. Damage modifiers, healing amplification, and control effects can dramatically change the outcome of battles.

For example:

  • Alexander + Knife Through Butter dramatically increases damage output and enables an Alex in a simple Qin-Zeno build to hard counter hyper regen builds with chaos immortals and even ones with chaos immortals and legendary skills! The skills and skill synergy in build matter far more than immortal rarity.
  • Strong legendary skill combinations can turn traditional elemental marches into serious threats even against Chaos compositions.

In many cases, improving the skill setup of a march creates more power than adding a new immortal.

2. Long-Term Flexibility

Legendary skills are not tied to a single immortal.

They can be:

  • Moved between immortals
  • Tested in different march compositions
  • Reused when you change builds later

This flexibility means legendary skills rarely become wasted investments.

3. Strong Elemental Marches Can Beat Chaos

A common misconception is that Chaos immortals automatically outperform elemental setups.

In practice, a well-built elemental march with legendary skills can absolutely defeat Chaos setups.

Many players running optimized skill combinations on traditional elemental immortals perform extremely well in PvP.

For detailed examples of these compositions, see the various elemental build guides on the wiki.

The Role of Shadow Immortals

Shadow immortals sit in a middle ground between legendary skills and Chaos investments.

When Sparks of Galaxy existed, shadow immortals were extremely expensive and largely reserved for very high spenders.

After the removal of that system, many players assumed shadow immortals would remain prohibitively expensive. However, the Rune Factory changes have made them noticeably more accessible than the first version of Rune Factory.

Even so, shadow immortals should still be evaluated carefully.

A powerful skill upgrade can often provide more value than adding another premium immortal. That being said, a defensive mage build will require you to build out a Himiko. Thus make your decision as to what to main carefully. Make sure you are ready for the cost of a Himiko on top of skills before you go down that road. If you are not – do another build and prioritize top tier legendary skills (see build guides for plenty examples).

For instance:

  • An Alexander march with Knife Through Butter frequently provides more performance improvement than replacing an immortal with a shadow unit.
  • Many high-performing players are currently running Khan Earth builds instead of the classic Himiko Earth build, with excellent results.
  • I am personally using Baldwin-Fire hybrid to beat chaos and meta Himiko and Khan builds.

These examples illustrate an important point: march strength comes from legendary skills, skill- and build synergy, not simply rarity of immortals.

When Chaos Immortals Become Worthwhile

Chaos immortals are best viewed as a late-stage investment.

They become more valuable when:

  • Your march already has strong legendary skills
  • Your core elemental setups are optimized
  • Additional skill upgrades provide diminishing returns

At that point, Chaos immortals can offer unique mechanics and specialized roles that enhance advanced builds.

However, unlocking a Chaos immortal is only the beginning. Their real performance depends on further investments such as:

  • Specialization
  • Artifact upgrades
  • Dust levels

Because of this, Chaos immortals represent a long-term progression path rather than an early upgrade target.

Player Perspective

After years of testing different setups across multiple seasons, one pattern becomes very clear.

The players who rush Chaos immortals often end up with impressive-looking marches that perform inconsistently because their skill setups are weak. Meanwhile, players who focus on strong skill combinations frequently outperform them using standard elemental immortals.

For example, a properly built elemental lineup using legendary skills can reliably challenge Chaos compositions, especially when the matchup and synergy are favorable.

In other words, the strength of the build matters far more than the rarity of the immortal.

Conclusion Summary

When deciding where to invest resources, most mid-to-large spenders should prioritize upgrades in the following order:

  1. Legendary (Red) Skills
  2. Shadow Immortals
  3. Chaos Immortals

Legendary skills provide the most efficient power increase because they strengthen the entire march and remain useful across many builds.

Chaos immortals are powerful but require extensive additional investment, making them better suited for late-stage progression.

Players who focus first on building strong skill combinations will usually see far better performance than those who chase new immortals too early.
