Chapter 3: The Hangover Knight

The third chapter of the Infinity Kingdom Lore Series takes us away from councils, maps and the larger history of Norheim and drops us straight into the streets of Vitas.

Officially titled “The Hangover Knight,” Chapter 3 is much more character-driven than the first two episodes. We have taverns, shady deals, black-market criminals, ships at sea, a mysterious sacred emblem and, naturally, a protagonist who seems to spend a considerable amount of his time either drinking or recovering from drinking.

The official description sets the scene rather dramatically:

“As war fleets tear through Vitas’s seas, and the shadows of the black market devour the order of the old city, the ancient sacred emblem emerges once more—and with it, a journey into the Abyss begins.”

That description is actually a pretty good indication of where the series seems to be heading. While there is plenty of humor in this episode, underneath it we are starting to get our first proper adventure story within the wider history of Norheim.

Welcome to Vitas

After Chapter 2 spent much of its time explaining how Norheim fractured into the kingdoms we know from the game, Chapter 3 finally takes us into one of those kingdoms. This time we are in Vitas, the green Kingdom of Norheim and one of the three kingdoms players can choose alongside Ruslan and Ydvia.

We've obviously known Vitas for years, but mostly as a place on the world map. We fight over its cities and territory, come across pieces of its history through Ruins and other lore, and generally know it as the green kingdom associated with life and peace. Chapter 3 is one of the first times we really get to see what life there might actually look like.

We move through streets, markets, taverns and docks filled with people going about their lives, and I really enjoyed seeing this side of Norheim. At the same time, Vitas isn't presented as quite the peaceful green kingdom we might have expected. There is a criminal underworld operating alongside ordinary city life, with a black market, shady deals and some rather dangerous people moving around the city.

That contrast works well with what we already know about Vitas. The older lore paints it as a kingdom closely associated with life and peace, while this episode shows that things aren't necessarily quite as peaceful once you leave the grand history of Norheim behind and head into the back streets.

The Hangover Knight

Our main character certainly isn't the type of great Norheim hero I was expecting to meet either. He has the cloak, dagger and fighting ability, but he also seems to have a rather close relationship with alcohol.

That becomes the running joke of the episode and eventually gives us the title, The Hangover Knight, complete with the wonderfully named Potion of Sobriety from where we first get to know our knight and main character.

I actually think the humor works better here than it did in Chapter 2. I wasn't a huge fan of the jokes in the previous episode because they sometimes felt inserted into what was otherwise supposed to be an explanation of some fairly important Norheim history. The Hangover Knight is clearly meant to be a somewhat ridiculous character from the beginning, so the humor feels more at home here.

He is still clearly capable of looking after himself, though, and his drunken adventure through Vitas ends up putting him right in the middle of something that seems to be much more important than whatever trouble he originally stumbled into.

The Black Market and the Sacred Emblem

The black market leads us to one of the most interesting pieces of lore in Chapter 3: the ancient sacred emblem.

We don't really know what it is yet, but there is clearly more to this object than its appearance would suggest. People are willing to fight over it, and its reappearance is important enough that the official description for the episode specifically mentions it alongside the coming journey into the Abyss.

There is also an obvious connection worth keeping an eye on. Vitas is associated with the Sacred Tree, its established kingdom emblem that long-time players may remember from the game's lore and Knowledge Contest. The object we see here certainly looks like it belongs within that same Vitas imagery, but I'm hesitant to say much more than that for now.

The episode specifically calls it an ancient sacred emblem, and we simply don't know yet whether this is the Sacred Tree emblem itself, something connected to it, or something else entirely. Hopefully that is something the next chapters will explain, because the Sacred Tree has been part of Vitas lore for a long time without us really knowing much about what it means.

Whatever our Hangover Knight has managed to get his hands on, it seems to be his ticket into the next part of the story.

Seeing Norheim From the Streets

I think this was probably my favourite part of Chapter 3. The first two chapters were mostly concerned with the larger history of Norheim: the Empire of Light, the war with the Dwarves and the events that eventually left the continent divided into the three kingdoms we know today.

This episode is much smaller in scale, and I think the series needed that. We aren't sitting with rulers and commanders discussing the future of Norheim anymore. We're wandering through taverns, markets, docks and back alleys with merchants, sailors, thieves and criminals.

After playing Infinity Kingdom for more than five years, it is surprisingly fun to finally see these places represented as somewhere people actually live. I've looked at Vitas on the world map thousands of times, occupied its cities, fought over its territory and read pieces of its history, but I've never really thought much about what walking through one of those cities would actually be like.

Chapter 3 gives us a little glimpse of that, and it does more for the world of Norheim than another big explanation of ancient wars probably would.

What Exactly Is the Abyss?

The other major question coming out of Chapter 3 is the Abyss.

We don't get much of an explanation in the episode itself, but the official description is quite specific about where all of this is heading. The ancient sacred emblem has emerged again, and with it begins “a journey into the Abyss.”

What that actually means is anyone's guess at this point. We don't know exactly what the Abyss is, why the emblem is connected to it or why our new drunken hero is apparently heading there. For now, I think it is better to leave those questions open rather than try to turn the few clues we have into answers that aren't there yet.

It does feel like Chapter 3 is the point where this lore series starts becoming more of an ongoing story, though. Chapters 1 and 2 gave us the background and explained some of the history that created modern Norheim. Now we're actually following someone living in that world, and apparently his adventure is about to take us into some of the older mysteries that have been sitting underneath the game's lore for years.

My Take on Chapter 3

I think Chapter 3 is probably my favourite episode so far. Part of that is simply because there is more here for me to dig into. We finally get to walk around Vitas rather than just hear about kingdoms and wars, we see its black market and criminal underworld, and we have an actual character to follow. On top of that, the sacred emblem and the Abyss give us two pretty big lore questions to carry into the next episode.

The animation continues to be excellent as well, and Vitas in particular looks great. I liked seeing the brighter markets and streets alongside the much darker taverns and alleys. It gives the kingdom a bit more personality than the peaceful green Vitas we know from the map and older lore.

More than anything, though, I finished this one actually wanting to watch Chapter 4. I want to know what the Sacred Tree emblem of Vitas really is and what it means. I want to know why this ancient emblem has suddenly resurfaced and what exactly the Abyss is. I suppose I also want to find out whether our new hero can stay sober for long enough to get there.

We'll continue following the story here on IK-Wiki as the next chapter is released.
