Understanding Charles’ Ultimate Ability — Clearing Up the Shield Absorption Misconception

Introduction
Charles’ ultimate ability has been one of the more frequently misunderstood skills in Infinity Kingdom, largely due to how its second clause is worded. On the surface, the description seems straightforward:
“Creates a shield for all units that absorbs damage (400%). Your Shield absorption will increase by additional 150% for 6 seconds.”
The first part is streight forward: a 400% shield applied to all allied units. The confusion starts with the second sentence. It reads like a general amplification effect, leading many to assume that any shield generated by Charles during those 6 seconds becomes stronger, right?
That assumption, however, does not match how the mechanic turns out to actually work. Let's dive in!
What the Ability Actually Does

Let’s break the skill into its real functional components:
Base Effect
- Charles casts his ultimate.
- All allied units (including himself) receive a shield equal to 400% of his relevant scaling stat (Aptitude-based).
Additional Absorption Clause
- The “+150% shield absorption for 6 seconds”: - Applies only to Charles himself
- Applies only to the shield generated by his ultimate
- Does not affect any other shield sources
In practical terms:
- Allies each receive a 400% shield
- Charles receives: - A 400% base shield
- Plus an additional 150% of that base value, resulting in a total of 600% shield

This is super important to understand, because scaling shield values - if that was possible - would open up to huge synergy builds with multiple shielding effects on Charles like Energy Shield, Jade Barrier, Sturdy Barrier, etc.

That however is NOTpossible, contrary to what I see many thinking and building for both in theoretical forums and in-game.
How the 6-Second Window Works
The timing component is equally important and often overlooked.
- The extra 200% shield value (600% total vs. 400%) is temporary
- It lasts for 6 seconds only
- If that additional portion is not fully consumed within that time, it expires
So functionally:
- Charles has a stronger initial shield buffer
- But only part of it is guaranteed to remain beyond 6 seconds
This makes the effect more of a niche front-loaded survivability boost, not a sustained scaling mechanic.
What It Does Not Do
This is where most misconceptions come from.
The 150% increase does NOT:
- Amplify Energy Shield (Tower of Knowledge)
- Enhance Sturdy Barrier (Talent specialization)
- Boost shields from other immortals

Even if Charles triggers another shield effect during that period, it behaves completely normally. This has been verified and confirmed via communication with the development team (through IKVIP discussions).
Conclusion Summary
Charles’ ultimate is often misread, but its real function is quite precise:
- All allies receive a 400% shield
- Charles alone receives a 600% shield (400% + 150%)
- The extra portion: - Lasts 6 seconds
- Expires if unused
- No other shield effects are amplified
Understanding this properly helps avoid building around nonexistent synergies and instead positions Charles where he performs best: as a frontline stabilizer with strong early durability.
Once you view the skill through that lens, his role in defensive compositions becomes much clearer—and much more reliable.
